Buzz and Woody have some very interesting ancestors including one of the foundation dogs, imported in the late 1970’s, to establish the UK’s German Spitz. Their Pom ancestry can be viewed on their sire Becks’ page, where 35 generations of one line of predecessors is recorded with photographs where possible.
Tum Tum van het Vlinderhof a white kleine Keeshond (ref D. Cavill’s book) was the sire of Poms and German Spitz, his grandchildren include Poms, Klein and Mittel Spitz. He appears in nine lines of Buzz and Woody’s pedigree (generations 10 through 13 inc.) due to line-breeding in their Morrell lineage.
In Holland "Keeshond" is equivalent to the German name of Spitz. So a Kleine Keeshond would be a Klein Spitz in Germany. The Pomeranian if under 22cm at the shoulder would be a Dwerg Keeshond in Holland or a Zwergspitz in Germany.
Any of these dogs coming to Britain were still considered to be a Pomeranian and because our Breed Standard has a suggested ideal weight of between 4 to 5.5lbs this clearly put the larger sizes at a great disadvantage in the show-ring.
In the mid-1970’s there was a concerted effort in Britain to re-establish the over 7lb weight Pomeranian, a size rarely shown after the KC withdrew CCs for this size in 1915. Pure white lines were no longer in the British gene pool and by recognising the size this would provide a chance to re-establish white Poms.
By 1985 the KC finally decided to recognise the larger size using the FCI names of German Spitz, Klein or Mittel (small or medium), with CCs after 1995. At that time there was a period of re-registration permitted where Poms could be designated as either Klein or Mittel Spitz if they had the necessary amount of recent German Spitz ancestry in their 3 generation pedigree. Note: The KC ended re-registration from the Toy or Miniature Pom (under 7lb) to plus 7lb Pomeranian in December 1909.
There was no category established for the Gross Spitz size (which would of course applied to some of the very early Poms – such as Mr Fawdry’s famous Charley).
Another Gt.grandfather of theirs (featured on Becks’ bio/pedigree page) is Ch Peninans Black Topper of Salvadure – he appears 11 times in their 6th through 9th generation pedigree – a son of his called Salvadure Fast and Furious became the sire or grandsire of many top Klein Spitz and some Mittel Spitz.
In this way Buzz and Woody have ‘cousins’ currently being exhibited as Klein or Mittel Spitz all over Europe.
Please Note – In many FCI countries Poms exceeding 22cms in height but less than 29cm can still be re-categorised as Klein Spitz.
