The Scottish Pomeranian Club re-formed in 1977 and gained Kennel Club recognition in 1978. In that year a Ltd. Show was held and the Best in Show winner was Mrs Ramsay’s Saymar The Vital Spark. By 1985 the Club held its first Championship Show and the Best in Show winner was Mrs Cawthera’s Ch Lireva Shooting Star who had been Reserve Best in Show at Crufts 1984. Some History on Poms in ScotlandIt was noted in circa 1770, Scottish philosopher David Hume took his Pomeranian Fox Dog “Foxey “ with him to visit Mrs Campbell of Succoth. Hume was frequently seen around the streets of Edinburgh accompanied by his dog. In 1899 The Dowager Countess of Rosslyn exhibited a blue show Pom called Blue Tinnie. Show records indicate two early Pomeranians based in Kelso – Reigo who was 2nd at a show in Glasgow in 1872 and Rufus who gained a 1st in Edinburgh 1873. Additionally Carlo from Glasgow was 2nd Edinburgh 1871, 1st Glasgow 1872 and 2nd in Glasgow 1873 also another Pom called Carlo from Edinburgh gained a 2nd place in both 1872 and 1873 at shows in Edinburgh. Spitz from Greenock won a 1st in Glasgow 1873. All these Poms are listed in the first Kennel Club Stud book of 1874 (the KC being formed in 1873) which recaps the show wins of Pomeranians between 1859 and 1873, commencing with Mr Thornley’s Alba who was exhibited in 1862. Therefore 5 of the original 43 Pomeranians entered in the Stud Book lived in Scotland.. The Pomeranian Club, based in England, was formed in February, 1891. Thereafter about 7 regional clubs were formed. According to the Mr Alan Bendelow’s instructive book written to commemorate The Pomeranian Club Centenary in 1991, a Scottish Pomeranian Club existed prior to 1911 Although not knowing when it was formed he quoted from a letter written to a newspaper in June 1911 which referred to 'the disappearance of the Pomeranian Club of Scotland.' The author of the letter Charles Harbert urges any breeder or interested person to contact him or Roy Geddes with a view to re-forming a Club. Mr Geddes and his wife had the Parkneuk kennel in Colinton, Edinburgh (a kennel in the lineage of Dixie – click here see his Meet the Ancestors pedigree). In a book published in 1934 “ Our Friend the Pomeranian “ by Rowland Johns six Pomeranian Clubs are named – N.E. Lancs, North of England, Pomeranian Club, South of England, West of England and Scottish Pomeranian Club.
In the 4th Edition of Show Pomeranians by Lilla Ives updated by Mrs Fred Thomson (Lochryan) in 1929 there is a mention of Mr Theo Marples’ chocolate Pom “ Poosey Nancy” a CC winner. This is interesting in that Poosey Nancy when owned by Mr J Storey was the outright winner of the Lochryan Cup donated to the Scottish Club by Mrs Fred Thomson. An article written in 1999 by an officer of Scottish Pom Club relates how the grandson of Mr Storey, Mr J. Morris returned the cup to the Club nearly 70 years later! Mr Morris attended the Championship show in May 1999 when the cup was presented to the best Scottish exhibit (who was also the BIS winner) Mr and Mrs McKinnon’s Rosegrange Phantom Star. The Cup is still listed in the Trophies for this show. In Hilary Harmar’s book “ Pomeranian “ written in 1967 and re-printed in 1976 she mentions that due to declining popularity of the Pomeranian only two clubs exist – The Pomeranian Club and the South of England Pomeranian Club. It is a very positive thing that even though annual registrations of Poms are comparable with 1966 that we now have 6 regional clubs. Note – A few Annual Registration figures: 1906 – 1217 / 1908 – 1759 / 1937 - 476/ 1965 – 722 1966 – 731/ 2005 – 703 / 2006 - 830 / 2007 - 703 From the past to present timesThe Scottish Pomeranian Club holds three well attended shows per year. There will be an Open Show in March followed by a Championship show May 08 and another Open show in Nov. Please contact the Club Hon. A NOTE ABOUT NEUTERSYou will see the word (NEUT) after the 1994 BCC and BIS winner's name. Later that year this lovely girl became Ch Linak Phantom Lady. It is perfectly acceptable to exhibit a neutered dog of either gender providing you have the permission of the Kennel Club. Males must have had to two nomally descended testicles before the operation. In certain cases permission may not be given. You must write and inform them of this (or any surgical procedure) and request approval to continue or commence exhibiting your dog.If the Kennel Club grants approval your dog's name will appear in the Kennel Club Gazette as having attained permission to show. The names of those refused permission also appears in the Gazette. The word NEUT no longer appears in show catalogues but will appear if your dog gains a Stud Book entry. For Poms this would be a champion show win in Limit or 1st or 2nd place in the Open class... additionally a CC or RCC gains a Stud Book place & also gaining a Junior Warrant. The Stud Book regulation can be found in the Year Book Part iii K 3.179 1.d' A neutered dog, which has qualified for an entry in the Stud Book will be listed therein with the letters 'NEUT' appearing after it's name.'
