"...he lowers his head, arches his back, puts his tail really low, and starts to run at top speed in circles. His tongue, hanging out the side of his mouth, flaps in the wind; his jaws spread open in a smile of ecstasy; his eyes shine in delight. Round and around he goes until he drops in happy exhaustion! Minnie Bezerk

Bezerking

I have a Yorkie and a Yorkie/Pom, Monty is my 3rd Yorkie so I understand the Yorkie outlook on life. However, Baldrick was my first experience with Pom traits as he clearly inherited a strong Pom gene.

On day two he suddenly started running rapidly round a living room chair, low to the ground, tail low, making tight turns - around he went - he then dashed out into the garden doing the same around a flower bed. Like a mad man he sped about looking like he was having lots of fun. He then barrelled up to the water dish, stood in it, paddled like fury so the whole floor was wet and then lay in it. We were amazed! His look said 'that was great fun'!

Happeth Jones calls this a bezerker and I can think of no better term to describe this unique quirk which encapsulates the Poms free spirit and sense of fun. Like the 'bezerkers' of old Norse history famed for blood curdling sudden charges striking fear into their foes with the intensity of their actions - the Poms exhibit their heritage in a good bezerk.

Bezerks can occur in very small areas (one of mine does it in our shower room only) - perhaps it was originally a way of warming up in a cold climate?

It's hard to photograph one as you don't know what triggers it off - these photos show our little Pom Minnie ( a 3 1/2lb dynamo - right) going bezerk in our field. My daughter's Pom Pip is having a bezerk on the left. The photo's show the tight turns (almost like a racing motorbike) and there are a couple of pictures from the straight run which illustrate the momentum and energy involved. Please do not encourage bezerks in areas with obstacles such as coffee tables and table/chair legs that could be dangerous to your Pom.
