Ch Peninan’s Black Topper of Salvadure appears twice in the 5 generation pedigree of Becks’ Morrell lineage being the double gt grandfather of Mathell Regal Gift of Morrell (Crufts BOB 1998) – she is the grandmother of Becks. This intrigued me as I had thought of Morrell as primarily an orange/orange sable line. As I extended Becks’ pedigree to my surprise I found that ‘Topper’ appeared 4 more times in the 6th generation, 3 times in the 7th generation and even 2 times in the 8 th generation --- a total of 11 times in all.

In an article written in 1990 it notes that Mrs Nancy Robson (Morrell) had recently revived her interest in blacks and was having some success exhibiting her new youngsters. An American book written in the early 60’s mentions two very famous blacks she owned – Ch The Non Pareil and Sanspareil ….. so I decided to see if Topper was descended from them.

This was a fascinating line to research and as I expected Mrs Robson’s famous black poms are in his ancestry via Topper’s dam Glenvalley Gossamer. As the 1990 article notes that the lines behind Sanspareil ( Ch The Non Pareil x Nubian Nymph) lie ‘ behind many of today’s blacks it would make good sense for Mrs Robson to pick up on her old black lines when she renewed her interest in blacks. Topper’s sire Ch Hadleigh Summer Lightning was a registered orange and many of his lines go back to Mrs Robson’s Gentleman of Morrell the sire of Ch Zambo of Zanow who is behind a high percentage of Hadleigh’s top winning poms.

Mrs Robson’s choice of poms in her breeding programme were all heavily connected to poms of yesteryear she had owned or bred. For instance by combining Regal Princess with Ch Cradarr Military Tattoo ( the sire of Becks) incorporated Poms such as Rocarr’s Spice of Life a descendant of Gentleman of Morrell and Ch Annarbe Sundown of Morrell a dog campaigned in 1959 and so forth.

A combination of line breeding and inbreeding has resulted in only 43 relatives out of a possible 127 at the 7th generation (Morrell side only).

The majority of his Morrell lines are based on Hadleigh and are recorded in the footnotes. If you refer to Rocky’s pedigree page this lists the ancestors of Ch. Hadleigh Summer Lightning (line two - in bio-ped format).

The wonderful black Poms of Mrs Robson live on today in continued unbroken black lines represented by 10 black Champions who descend from Topper via his black dam Glenvalley Gossamer. A list of these Poms and 11 other Champion descendents of Topper in various other colours appears in the footnotes.

Becks was the last show dog of Mrs Robson and she exhibited him with great success even though she was 91 years old. We have had the pleasure of owning him for three years. Mrs Robson (then Mrs Gascoyne) made up Ch The Non Pareil circa 1939 and was devoted to Poms throughout her long life, she was also the President of the Northern Pomeranian Club for many years. Her mother Mrs Butler also was a breeder of Pomeranians and all the wonderful Zanow poms were bred by her.

It is nice to know that in Becks famous Poms bred or owned by Mrs Robson up to 70 years ago continue onwards!

Glenvalley Could It Be Magic ‘Ozzie’(black) and Glenvalley Vanilla Spice at Pomkins ‘Teddi’ ( cream sable) - photos below - and Glenvalley Rocket von Pomkins ‘Rocky’ (o/s) are also near descendants of Topper. All poms listed behind Topper in the below table are black.
